Review: Warhammer 40k Imperium Magazine Issue #2

I received an email that issues #4-7 will be delayed by two weeks. It should be OK. Delays happen and most of the time there's nothing me as a consumer can do but to wait. Besides, the miniatures from issue #2 and #3 have not been painted yet. Just make use of the delay and get some of those gray plastic painted and assembled.

Here's the Primaris Lieutenant painted as a member of Dark Angels. This is the very first Space Marine that I painted and I must say GW holds its own when it comes to their miniatures. I have painted a lot of Bones and metal figures from Reaper, dnd miniatures from Wizkids, various boardgame pieces, and 3d printed figures but having an actual piece from GW is a different experience. I can't say it's above the rest, it's just different. I'm not a big fan of edge highlighting, I'm more of a glaze and subtle transitions to highlight. But with this particular Primaris Lieutenant, edge highlighting makes a lot of sense, a diversion from my usual method of painting.

Here's the Royal Warden. If there is one miniature (or 40k faction for the matter) that I would take to speed painting and be extremely satisfied, it is the Necrons. This is just a simple zenithal spray with silver paint and washes: Reikland Fleshshade for the armor, Black Templar for the Weapon, Nazdeg Yellow for the cape. The glowing cables and nodules are painted traditionally. Highlights with silver paint afterwards.

These are the Necron Warriors that came with the issue #2, still a work in progress. Happy with the result... so far. For $12 I got these 3 miniatures, a pot of Runelord Brass, and a starter brush (which is crappy). GW retail has this figure at $5 a piece, considering the price of a box of Necron Warriors. We are already ahead in "savings" (not actual savings because we are in reality, spending).

So is it a good deal? It is specially if you don't have paints in your arsenal, yet. The pot of Runelord Brass and the brush is a nice bonus to this week's magazine. I'll sell mine for a few bucks and buy a nicer paintbrush.
